South Shore Conservatory (SSC) invites audiences to step back in time and experience the golden era of swing with Dan Gabel and His Orchestra on Saturday, October 18, from 3:00-5:00 pm with doors opening at 2:00 pm in the Carr Amphitheater, One Conservatory Drive in Hingham, as they present "The American Big Band Experience." Dan Gabel’s authentic 18-piece jazz big band, featuring award-winning vocalist Kimberly Hawkey, brings to life the timeless music of Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey. Appropriate for all ages, enjoy an afternoon of more than just great music. With a food truck, snacks and beverages, lawn games, and more, families are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets, stretch out on the lawn, grab something to eat, and let their kids play, all while enjoying live music from world-class jazz artists. SSC students will be showcased as well, with a student ensemble opening the show and several students invited on stage to solo alongside the orchestra and perform side-by-side with seasoned professionals. Dan Gabel and his Bands have entertained three governors, a four-star general, sold out concerts, and performed at countless dances, weddings, and fundraisers. Gabel's arrangements and compositions have been commissioned and performed across the U.S. by professional orchestras, Big Bands, and student ensembles. Hailed by the Boston Globe as “the real deal, (in a bandleader) that looks and sounds like the 1940s” and by the Syncopated Times as “the champion of Big Bands and vintage jazz”, Gabel is a trombonist, arranger, bandleader, historian, and educator. Vocalist Kimberly Hawkey effortlessly blends genres, transporting audiences to worlds of beauty with each crystalline note. Whether solo, fronting her band, or singing with an orchestra, her captivating and cinematic voice offers a vintage soul-nourishment that transcends the modern age. Hawkey is a Johnny Mercer Award winner and Gold Medalist at the American Traditions Vocal Competition. Her 2021 debut with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, fulfilled a long-held dream to perform with a Big Band. It was on that legendary bandstand where Kimberly met bandleader Gabel. Tickets to South Shore Conservatory’s "The American Big Band Experience" are $50 for adult pavilion seating, $25 for adult lawn seating, and $10 for student lawn seating, and may be purchased at https://give.sscmusic.org/the-american-big-band-experience. SSC students may attend for free. Learn more about South Shore Conservatory at sscmusic.org or find South Shore Conservatory on Facebook or Instagram.
